Podcast Finds: This American Life

This American Life

The concept of the podcasts has now firmly cemented its place as a recognised form of radio broadcasting on demand, at the listener’s pace. Here in the UK, The Ricky Gervais Show, staring the man himself, his comedy partner Stephen Merchant and former producer Karl Pilkington still remains one of the most popular podcast programmes. The BBC’s news and current affairs programme, Today on Radio 4, is also widely listened to and is climbing up the popularity ranks in the podcast world.

While we have explored the world of podcasting here on VisVox, we have understandably focused on our home turf. So now we are going international. Research has led me to a rather popular podcast across the pond. Having listened to the some of the shows, it is now clear why This American Life is as popular as it is. Every week the show simply dives into human interest stories based on a theme, which listeners can easily identify with.

According to This American Life, more than half a million people across America download each episode. Episodes are available free for one week, but with such high figures, This American Life has tapped into a money making opportunity. It charges just 99 cents to download archived episodes.
