Here at VisVox we endeavour to keep you up to date with all the latest and greatest in the world of podcasts and slideshows. We’ve spoken to all sorts of people on the subject, and have loved listening to their opinions relating to all things audio-visual.

Heather Gorringe, Founder of Wiggly Wigglers

In the early 1990s, Heather came up with the idea of selling the UK’s first compost worm kits after noticing the effectiveness of their use on the family farm.  The business now has a turnover of £2.5million and has won Heather various national awards for enterprise.

As part of their sales strategy, the Gorringe family produce a weekly podcast to inform listeners about what they’re doing, offer tips and generally aim to entertain their customers.  Rob Carragher spoke to Heather about why the family chose podcasting to widen their reputation, how it has helped their business and what she hopes to achieve in the future.

Dave White, Photography Director at Duckrabbit

Vanessa Baffoe spoke at length to photojournalist Dave White about the future and potential of audio slideshows. Duckrabbit is a UK based journalism and production company working exclusively with still images and audio.

Dave, who used to be a contributing editor of Marie Claire, spoke about the current state of audio slideshows and forecasted the future this industry. He also talked about the money making potential in the area and gave tips on how to put together an effective piece of audio slideshow.

Alongside its multimedia work, Duckrabbit also produce radio documentaries and train journalists in multimedia production. Dave’s extensive knowledge and expertise gave us a lot of information, which has allowed us to successfully create a series with Duckrabbit, talking about all aspects of audio slideshows, from its history to the law on copyright.

Francesca Panetta, Creator and Director of The Hackney Podcast

The Hackney Podcast is the labour of love of Francesca Panetta, The Guardian’s Senior Audio Producer.  She started the project up in 2008 to explore Hackney in a innovative way through the medium of podcasting.  As an experienced radio producer at BBC Radio 3 and 4 previously, Francesca used her considerable knowledge to bring The Hackney Podcast to the worldwide audience that it enjoys today.

Rob Carragher spoke to Francesca about her efforts to bring to life a local area through podcasting, her love of audio and her hopes for the podcast in the future.

Kate Griffin, Press Officer Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings

How is the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) using new media to talk about old buildings? Harriet Bradshaw went to find out at SPAB’s Head Quarters, which is an 18th century Huguenot house in East London.   She spoke to Kate Griffin about how they’re using podcasts, audio slideshows and social media to tell people about the charity and what it does.  Harriet chose to illustrate the interview with an audio slideshow to set the scene.

Here at VisVox we’re not just interested in how journalists are using online audio. This is why Harriet Bradshaw spoke to Steven Bell. He’s a Director at GLC Ltd, a hedge fund firm. But he also co-presents Loz N Belly, a financial podcast for the company. It’s been running since 2008 and he told us all about how the business benefits from having a podcast, what careful considerations you have to make when producing a financial one, and how to prepare for the studio discussion.

Steve Mowbray, presenter at Radio Jackie

Radio Jackie was one of the most popular pirate stations and, based in south west London, it has retained that local appeal since gaining a licence in 2003. Steve Mowbray is a presenter at the station, and has also been instrumental in its development on a multimedia platform.

Ellen Arnold spoke to Steve about the future for commercial radio and the growing need to adapt to new technologies. In this, the first of two parts, Steve gives an insight into the history of Jackie, and how he sees mobile phones playing a big part in their future.

Kevin Ross, vodcast creator at Melton Times

The Melton Times is a local newspaper in Leicestershire and offers a vodcast – or audio slideshow – rounding up the area’s weekly news. Ellen Arnold spoke to Kevin Ross about localising audio slideshows and podcasts, and where he’d like to see the medium going in the future.
