Top of the polls

Here at VisVox we like to see ourselves as the sounding board for all your audio-visual thoughts and opinions. We want to know what you think and why you think it about all the issues we discuss – podcasts, slideshows, online radio. If its got sound and it’s interactive, we want to know about it.

So we’ve compiled a series of polls to get to know what our online community really thinks. And you can find them all here. We’ll be adding more, and analysing our findings with your comments. Audio-visual tools are still a burgeoning medium in online journalism, and with your help we can uncover whether they’ll be sticking around for the long haul, and where they’ll be going next.

Before my journey into the world of audio slide shows, I was rather pessimistic and somewhat judgemental of this method of communication. But I have come out of the other side and have grown rather fond of audio slide shows. But there is still a major question with other people, which is, will audio slideshows ever become as popular as video?

***

Are traditional slideshows the way of the past? Are audio slideshows just that bit more engaging? What do you think?

What makes a listener tick? What makes you feel part of an audio community? Is it the location? Or topic of interest? Or something entirely different?

Let us know in this simple poll!

Curiosity has got the better of me this drab miserable Friday. I’ve been living vicariously through some of the travel slideshows we’ve featured so far on VisVox and got to thinking – what’s the most popular audio slideshow on VisVox at the moment?

Are you, like me, a fan of the incredible pictures of far flung exotic places? Or do you enjoy learning through the science slides? And if you’ve seen others around that we’re yet to feature on VisVox but think are worthy of a bit of analysis then let us know; the more slideshows the better as far as we’re concerned.

So cast your vote, and let us know below what makes your favourite and why.

As we’ve already discussed, the use of audio slideshows is limited at best, yet the scope they offer is vast. Take almost any set of photographs and marry them up with some carefully constructed dialogue and you have a feature that can be on any subject, of any length, and for any audience.

But how does the medium translate best? As a weekly news round up, as an arts feature, to highlight an humanitarian point of interest?

Should Audio Slideshows be called something different?

We want to hear what you think. Vote on our poll, or send us your suggestions by commenting on this post.

We’ve been looking at podcasts in some depth for a couple of weeks now. But what makes them work as a medium, and how are they best utilised? It seems like not a day goes by without a new podcast of some description popping up, so what makes the best – and what makes the worst?

***

What are your thoughts regarding podcasts? What is their place in journalism? How should their relationship with radio be defined? With reports continually doing the rounds about radio’s declining popularity, can this – however accurate – be attributed to the ever increasing popularity of podcasting? Should the two be held mutually exclusive?
